HUST delegation visited US

A HUST delegation visited several cities in US, including Atlanta, New York City, Boston, Detroit, Rhode Island, Pittsburgh, and Washington DC, etc. Here are some highlights.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of GITI, a New York based information company founded by a HUSTer Tom Gong, HUAAN will have its own domain name, hust.org. With the wide spread support, we hope our current web sites will be transfered to the new site in the near future. The new arrangement makes it possible to have a team to maintain the web site and better serve our community. Here we call alumni with interests in web design join our team.

Dr. Cai,

A delegation from Huazhong University of Science and Technology visited New York Metropolitan area during Oct. 21 to 23. The members are Prof. Zhu Yuquan, the secretary of the Party Committee; Prof. Zou Shoubin, standing vice president; Prof. Wang Cheng, president assistant; and Prof. Yu Hailin, associate director of foreign affairs.

The husters in New York Metropolitan Region hosted a welcome reception in Flushing, New York, the evening of Oct. 22. The delegates had met with 15 alumnus at the reception, plus two during the day when visiting GITI, a leader of on line training, founded by a huster, Tom Gong, at the center of Manhattan, NY. They were very impressed by the number of alumnus in this area, and also the achievements.

The reception event also served as the foundation of the HUST Alumni Association -- New York Metropolitan Region.

Many issues such as coordination between husters and HUST or among husters were discussed. One action taken is that GITI had registered the web site www.hust.org and kindly offered for the use of husters -- free of charge. Since the site name fits hust perfectly, we propose to you that the site be used as the official site for HUSTAA - North America, and the sponsorship of GITI be recognized to show our appreciation for their support. The site, of cause, will be maintained by the headquarters and we would like to create and maintain a home page for our region within the official site. If you and the leadership of HUSTAA are interested in the proposal, please let us know and details of implementation can then be discussed.

Dr. Liu:

I am very glad to hear from you and I congratulate you on the HUST alumni association at NY.

As for the hust.org site, Dr. Gong had contacted me at the end of May, and then we further discussed the setup and operating principles of the sever through emails between Dr. Gong, Dr. HU Zhimin, Dr. Michael Liu and me. I don't know what's the status now. We originally agreed that we are going to have a team to take the daily administration task, as from my experience, no matter how creative one individual is, the web site will not be as lively or diversified as those maintained by a team. Besides, a team can share the work load. Personally, I am all for it. So why not we get it running first and then improve it?

Best regards,

Yidao Cai

Husters in Greater Metro Detroit Area hosted a Gala on Nov. 5 to welcome the delegation from HUST. Member of delegation included Prof. Zhu Yuqian, the Secretary of the Party Committee; Prof. Zou Soubin, Executive Vice President; Prof. Wang Cheng, President Assistant; and Prof. Yu Hailin, Deputy Director of foreign affairs.

There were total 40 Husters attended this Gala. Welcome party was superb. The delegation, especially the head of University Prof. Zhu was very much impressed with our professionalism. We had an open dialog with them. This was the first time the chairman of the university council to visit the Detroit with the sole purpose of meeting and building friendship with HUST alumni in Great Detroit Area.

We had also arranged tours of Ford Wixom Vehicle Assembly Plant, Ford Research Lab and Detroit Diesel Plant for the delegation during their two-day visit. The tours gave them a true understanding of the heartbeat of Auto Capital. At Ford Wixom vehicle assembly plant, delegation members also had opportunity to test drive brand new model year 99 Towncar that just rolled off the assembly line. Both Prof Zhu and Zou admired that Towncar is the most fabulous vehicle they have ever driven, and Wixom plant is the best assembly plant they have ever visited.

To keep the momentum rolling, Huster in North America will coordinate a homepage of HUSTER together. We are proposing to have website administrators from each local chapters to collaboratively manage and maintain it. Hence, we are soliciting volunteers who are willing to help and also possess basic knowledge of internet to fulfill this special task. Please contact the writer if you are interested in.

Special thanks to the husters who helped us to host delegation, organize Gala, and arrange the tours.

Michael

HUST delegation visited Atlanta from 10/28/98 to 10/30/98, one of longest stop in their U.S. tour.

The delegation started their Atlanta activities on 10/28 with a friendly and productive academic visit to Georgia Institute of Technology. They were taken by three Husters on 10/29 to tour Atlanta's landmarks such as Centennial Olympic Park, CNN, and Coca-cola World.

The highlight of their Atlanta activities was on the evening of 10/29, when a dinner party was held with more than 25 HUSTers attended. It was a great and unforgettable reunion night: students found their teachers, friends found friends .... the world is getting smaller after so many years. One regrettable thing: Prof. Wang Cheng's desire of a high-speed driving on U.S. highway could not be fulfilled because of tight schedule (not because of availability of sports cars).

The most exciting thing in the evening was the establishment of HUAAN of Georgia. Dr. Zhang Zhiqiang, a Huster from 03/78-01/82 of Elec. & Inform. Engineering, currently with BellSouth Sci & Tech, was elected as the first Chairperson of HUAAN of GA.

HUAAN of GA also likes to take this opportunity to thank all Husters who organized, coordinated and participated all the activities.

Subject: HUST Delegation Visit at Pittsburgh, PA
Dear Dr, Cai,

The same delegation from HUST headed by the Party Secretary Prof. Zhu Yuguan visited Pittsburgh, PA from 11/2/98 - 11/4/98.

The delegates met with 9 HUST alumnus at Metro Pittsburgh area including three graduates from HUST Kinder Garden (Future of our country). They had visited FORE Systems, a leading Internet ATM switch vendor, Carnegie Mellon University, local Wal-Mart, and so on. They were impressed about the affordable prices of the clothes Wal-Mart sold (even cheaper than those in China!!).

We had not established Pittsburgh Chapter of HUAAN due to the limited number of alumnus in the area. However, we do appreciate the friendship and education HUST has given to us. As a matter of fact, Dr. Zhang Jingfeng will host a HUSTER party during the Thanksgiving holiday.
