Hi, everybody: About two weeks ago I reported to you the tragic death of Dr. WU Ya and her daughter Jessica Lei. In this email please find information about their memorial service, which was held on January 18 in Windsor, Canada. Also included in this message are brief biography of Dr. Wu Ya and her daughter Jessica. Since the last email message to our alumni net, many have expressed their condolences to Dr. Wu Ya's family. Xingyi ============================= Dear Friends: The memorial service for Dr. Ya Wu and her daughter Jessica Yin Lei was held at the Chinese Alliance Church, Windsor, Canada, on January 18, 2000, at 7:30pm. The service was presided by Rev. Shen of Michigan and hundreds of friends, colleagues, and local residents attended the service and paid their last respect to the two outstanding women who had tragically died in a traffic accident during the last week of 1999. About twenty friends and HUST alumni from Michigan attended the service and expressed their condolence to Mr. Yuanxue Lei. In the remembrance, HUST-Michigan president Xiaoming Deng introduced to the mourners the extraordinary accomplishments Dr. Wu achieved when working in HUST and the lifetime contribution to the field of manufacturing sciences and engineering. Jessica's teachers and schoolmates cherished the memory of Jessica as a positive, loving individual who constantly strived for achieving higher goals. Mr. Yasheng ZHAO, President of Chinese Association of Greater Windsor recalled how Ya WU and Jessica served and impacted the community and people around them. In his concluding remarks, Mr. Yuanxue Lei expressed his deep sorrow for the loss of his wife and daughter. He also expressed his sincere gratitude towards the people who extended their support in the past a few weeks, such support gave him the strength to move forward. HUST-Michigan has set up an account for receiving donations for helping the Ya Wu and Jessica Lei funeral services and for helping Ya Wu's mother who was also seriously injured in the accident. Dr. Wu was a distinguished professor of Mechanical Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), China, and a senior research engineer at the Technical Center of Federal Mogul in Michigan. During her extraordinary academic career, Dr. Wu received the Huo Yingdong Award for Young University Professors and a National Women Pioneer award. She published over 100 technical papers and authored and co-authored five academic books. She also registered three patents in Canada. Dr. Wu completed undergraduate and graduate studies in mechanical engineering, and received her Ph.D. in 92, all from HUST. ====== A Brief Bio for Miss Jessica Lei ======== Miss Jessica Yin Lei was born on May 31, 1981 in Wuhan, China and died on December 31, 1999 in California, USA, at the age of 18. The only child of Ya Wu and Mr. Yuanxue Lei, Jessica was a freshman in the Engineering Science Program at the University of Toronto. Jessica came to Canada in 1995, and soon became a national star in mathematics. She won the Bronze Medals in the Canadian Computing Contest in 97 and 98, and the Silver Medal in 99. Jessica took the first place in Western Ontario in the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge in 96 and 97. She was the Gold Medalist for the Fermat Contest in 97, and received the Gold Medal for the Descartes Contest. In 1998 and 1999, Jessica participated in the 39-th (Taiwan) and 40-th (Romania) Olympic Mathematics Competition, representing Canada. She received, upon her high school graduation, the Canadian Governor General's Award.
