Follow-up (From CND-Globe, Jan. 3, 1996, originally from China Daily)

7. University sets Chinese test for science majors ---- The Huazhong
University of Science and Technology in Wuhan is paying special attention
to the mastering of the Chinese language by introducing a test which
students must pass before graduation, according to a report in the
Shanghai-based Wenhui Daily. The examination comprising four tests -- of
Chinese, ancient Chinese literature, reading comprehension and writing --
is to be held once a year and will become a regular feature like the
English and computer tests at the university. The action aims to
strengthen native-language skills among the university students. The
level of such skills among science and engineering students was not
encouraging, as was shown by an examination of the Chinese languae
conducted by the university in September. The average score in the test
was 63.9 among the 3,511 newly enrolled students. The results of the
examination caused a stir in Chinese education circles. More than 100
universities asked for the test papers and the final analysis report.
