HUST Alumni Web Site: English and Chinese Versions

When our web site was first developed in 1995, we use English exclusively. Now it is impossible not to use Chinese on a web site serving mainly Chinese people. However, we still need to make it friendly to non-Chinese speakers or alumni who are unable to display Chinese on their computer. From December 2005, we made our default index page English and add a seperate Chinese index page.

People who are able to read Chinese on their computers should may use Chinese version for better experience.

English contents on this site

We have to admit that majority of content on this site are Chinese only or a mixed of English and Chinese. In that sense, this site is not friendly to people who read English only. We will gradually increase the number of pages in English, mainly regarding the history of and basic introduction to HUST. We will also convert our alumni directory capable of English only (search, submission).

Language setting on web pages

Previously we do not set the language (character encoding) on our web pages. This can be a problem because browsers have to detect the character encoding correctly, and they frequently fail, resulting in Chinese characters unreadable and manual intervention is needed. From December 2005, we began setting character encoding on web pages. For web pages with English contents, we will make seperate Chinese and English pages.

How to display Chinese on my computer?

You do not need a Chinese operating system to display Chinese on your computer. Nowadays the browsers are pretty smart. When the browser encounters a Chinese page, it will ask you to install neccessary files to display Chinese. Just follow the instructions to install the files and you computer will be able to display Chinese. Please note that this process does not necessarily enable you to write Chinese (input Chinese into computer).
